Young children in New Zealand are getting about five times more pesticide residues than young American children. A sizable proportion of young NZ children could suffer from acute organophosphate poisoning from the residues in their food. The young child, aged 13 years old takes in more pesticide residues than other age-sex groups, more than 2½ times more than men, for example.
More than half of the pesticides used in New Zealand daily are known to cause cancer and birth defects. Like it or not, every time you put non-organic fruit and vegetables into your mouth, the chances are that you are also putting in undesirable chemicals.

The link between male fertility and hormone disrupting chemicals is now more fully understood. A new study shows that adult sperm, when exposed to hormone disrupting chemicals (often called endocrine disruptors), mature too quickly and fail to reach and fertilize the egg. Dozens of pesticides are known or suspected endocrine disruptors. The list includes widely used herbicides such as 24D, atrazine and simazine, common organophosphates (e.g. mala-thion and chlopyrifos), the fungicide mancozeb and persistent chlorinated pesticides such as endosulfan and DDT. Exposure to low doses of pesticides early in life could be affecting the subsequent development and functioning of children's brains and nervous system, according to US research published recently. Pesticides used in New Zealand, notably the herbicide 2,4-D and the organophosphate insecticide chlorpyrifos, have been linked to brain damage in young animals, embryos and foetuses.

Acute (immediate) effects can include irritation, contact dermatitis, rashes, blisters, etc. Pesticides can be endocrine distruptors, carcinogens, mutagens, neurotoxins, immunotoxins and teratogens. Add them to the toxic load of a young child or immune-compromised person and there can be serious trouble.
Many pesticides are cumulative - they add up in the body and cannot be excreted, causing more damage as time goes on.

Beginning at the foetal stage and continuing through adolescence, children are physiologically (physically) very different from adults. They are in a dynamic stage of growth, with cells multiplying and organ systems developing at a rapid rate. At birth, their nervous, respiratory, reproductive and immune systems are far from fully developed.
Because metabolic systems are still developing in the foetus and child, their ability to detoxify and excrete toxins differs from that of adults. Generally they are not able to excrete toxins as well as adults, and thus are more vulnerable to them.
Because a child's immune system is less developed, it cannot protect against toxic exposures as well as an adult is protected. For some toxins, children are missing important biochemical detoxifying mechanisms, which only develop later in life.
Developing cells in children's bodies are more suscepctible to damage than adults' cells that have completed development, especially for the central nervous system. During the development of a child - from conception through to adolescence - there are particular windows of vulnerability to environmental hazards. Exposure at those moments of vulnerability can lead to permanent and irreversible damage. Even small doses of neurotoxins, which would be harmless in an adult, can alter a child's nervous system development.
Children drink more water, eat more food and breathe more air per pound of body weight than adults. Thus, their bodies are easily overwhelmed by levels of pollutants that are much higher than adult exposures, relative to body weight.
Growing children between 1 and 5 years old eat 3-4 times as much food per pound of body weight than the average adult, giving them greater exposure to pesticides and other contaminants in foods.
