If they're not organic, definitely not!

Certified organic produce means that nasty pesticides have not been used in the growing of that produce.  Many, if not all, non-organic fruit and vegetables in New Zealand are highly sprayed.

Over 3,000 tonnes of pesticides - including insecticides, herbicides and fungicides - are used in NZ every year.  More than half are known to cause cancer and birth defects.  Like it or not, every time you put non-organic fruit and vegetables into your mouth, the chances are that you are also putting in undesirable chemicals.

New Zealand does not monitor the pesticide residues in imported produce. It doesn't even monitor satisfactorily what we grow in New Zealand. The most rigorous monitoring that is done is carried out on meat and produce that is exported from New Zealand, to satisfy the requirements of the importing countries. The public, however, cannot get access to this data.

What are the negatives about pesticides?  Pesticides have been linked to many chronic (long-term) ill-health conditions, such as:  

...and much, much more.  Acute (immediate) effects can include irritation, contact dermatitis, rashes, blisters, etc. Pesticides can be endocrine distruptors, carcinogens, mutagens, neurotoxins, immunotoxins and teratogens.  Add them to the toxic load of a young child or an immune-compromised person and there can be serious trouble.

Many pesticides are cumulative - they add up in the body and cannot be excreted, causing more damage as time goes on.

Even tiny quantities of endocrine or hormonal disruptors have been found to cause all sorts of damage, especially to the developing foetus.

Your body is an amazing self-healing mechanism, if given the right ingredients (nutrients), if the balance between excessive stress and optimal stress is not too out of whack and as many toxins are avoided as possible. Young children are especially vulnerable, as are those with compromised immune systems - they don't have the developed/strong organs to break down these toxins so that they can exit the body.  But we all need to watch our toxic load, so that we can avoid serious illness and live long, healthy lives.
